The Honorable Condoleezza Rice Dear Dr. Rice,
I am writing this letter as the Acting Executive Director of the Foundation For China in the 21st Century in the US to express the sincere thanks to you from myself and all of my colleagues for your ongoing effort on behalf of Dr. Yang Jianli, who has been detained in China since April 2002. In your letter to his wife, Dr. Christina Fu, dated March 2003, you wrote that the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Beijing have passed Chinese authorities on the case. My colleagues and I all greatly appreciate the efforts undertaken on this issue, particularly in light of Dr. Yang Jianli's current serious medical condition. As you may know, he suffered a stroke in July of 2004. On a recent visit by his brother and sister, he reported that he has continued to experience numbness on his left side and is not receiving adequate medical case. Dr. Yang is the President of our Foundation and one of the prominent activists of Chinese pro-democracy movement. The Foundation for China in the 21st Century was founded in 1990 in the wake of the infamous Tiananmen Square Massacre in Beijing. Realizing the urgent need to institute true democracy and human rights in China and the vital importance of establishing an enduring process to secure and preserve a lasting democracy, a number of well respected scholars and prominent human rights activists established this non-profit, academic, educational and charitable organization. Under his leadership our Foundation, as an intellectual think-tank, has provided theoretical and strategic thinking for transformation of constitutional democratization in China during the past decade. My colleagues and I are all looking forward to seeing Dr. Yang's safe return to continuously lead the Foundation to go further steps for China's future. Again, we greatly appreciate your ongoing efforts on behalf of Dr. Yang Jianli, his wife Christina, and their children. We hope that you will continue these efforts after you are confirmed as Secretary of State. Please et us know if we can do anything as American citizens to secure Dr. Yang's safe return to the United States.
