BEIJING Chinese officials say that a jailed Boston-based Chinese political activist is in good health.

A government spokesman in Beijing says Yang Jianli (yahng jen-lee) is able to do the things that he likes, such as reading novels and participating in activities organized by prison officials. And they say his case is being handled according to law.

Yang is serving a five-year sentence on charges of spying for rival Taiwan and entering China illegally. Yang -- who runs a foundation that advocates democratic change in China -- says he was meeting with Chinese dissidents and laid-off workers when he was detained in 2002.

Yang's wife visited him last January, and said he did not look healthy. And a letter signed by 40 U-S senators say the 41-year-old Yang has been tortured while in prison.
